Roulette

In the Roulette (play now) game the player places a bet on a number, color, odds or a group of numbers on the Roulette table. The Roulette wheel and ball are spun, and winnings are determined by the slot on the Roulette wheel where the ball finally stops. The amount of the payoff depends on how the bet was placed.

An American roulette wheel has 38 identical pockets, numbered 0, 00 and then 1 to 36. The pocket alternate between red and black as they go around the wheel (the o and 00 are coloured green) and the numbers, although appearing random, are precisely arranged. The wheel rests at one end of a long table on which the betting layout is marked.

The roulette wheel is kept in perpetual motion, spinning in an anticlockwise direction, with the croupier spinning it faster once a game is about to begin. He sets a ball rolling along the edge of the wheel, above the numbered pockets, and in the opposite direction to the wheel’s spin. As the ball loses momentum, it slows down, bouncing across the wheel a few times before settling in one of the numbered pockets. The aim of the game is to bet on the winning number, and the players have many betting options available to them. The only caution is that in US roulette all bets are lost when the ball lands on either of the two zeros on the wheel, unless the zero or double-zero is included in the bet.

Roulette chips

Roulette is the only game in the casino to use chips unique to the game. Called ‘non-value’ chips, they cannot be used in any other game. Each player- up to six or seven can take part in the action at any one roulette table – buys his own roulette chips at the table. Each one has a different colour chips assigned to him and he can decide on its value. For example, a player arriving with 500 casino chips, wanting to make 5-unit bets, will receive 100 roulette chips.

The Role of the croupier

Each roulette table in the casino will have a croupier who is responsible for spinning the ball and calling ‘no more bets’ when the ball begins to slow down and bounces across the wheel. Bets made after this call are not valid and chips are returned to the player. The roulette croupier announces the winning number and its colour. He then collects all the losing bets and pays the winning bets- outside bet are paid first, then inside bets.

There may be second croupier at the table, who sorts the chips for winning bets, but it is always the primary croupier who passes winning chips to the players. Once the table is clear, new bets are made and the croupier sends the ball for another spin.

Placing a bet

When it comes to placing a bet in roulette, players have a considerable choice, with eleven types of bet falling in two different groups – ‘inside bets’ and ‘outside bets’. Each table has a minimum and a maximum for each type of bet, and you can make as many bets as you like provided you pay at least the minimum on each of the outside bets and you meet or exceed the minimum on any collective inside bets. The odds range from 35 to 1 to even money, with the probability of winning reducing as the payouts increase.
